Purpose
The purpose of this Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) Safety & Compliance Program is to establish University-wide requirements for the safe operation, inspection, training, and maintenance of powered industrial trucks in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178. The program ensures PIT operations at Syracuse University are conducted safely by trained and certified operators, protecting personnel, property, and campus operations.
This program applies to all Syracuse University-owned or operated facilities where PIT activity occurs, including:
- Physical Plant
- Dining / Food Services
- Athletics
- Facilities Warehouse
- JMA Dome
It applies to all forklift operations including loading docks, receiving areas, staging areas, indoor and outdoor transport routes, storage locations, and material-handling zones.
FLSS is the program owner and is responsible for oversight of PIT training, evaluation, recordkeeping, certification, operator removal when unsafe, and equipment lockout for unsafe PIT conditions.
FLSS has full authority to:
- Remove uncertified or unsafe operators from service
- Remove unsafe equipment from service
- Restrict PIT operations when hazards are identified
