Lock Out/Tag Out

Purpose

The Syracuse University Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Program establishes the minimum requirements that must be followed for isolating energy sources whenever maintenance or servicing is done on machines or equipment. This Program shall be followed to provide for the proper isolation and storage of energy hazards for electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, Pneumatic, thermal or chemical sources. This Program outlines the procedures that shall be followed to stop, isolate lockout and verify hazardous energy sources before employees perform servicing or maintenance on equipment where the unexpected energization or start-up of machine or equipment or release of stored energy could cause injury.

This program is designed to meet the criteria specified by the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) Lockout/Tagout Standard – 29 CFR Part 1910.147 for protection for all Syracuse University workers against hazardous energy sources.

This program applies to all personnel (employees and temporary employees) who are working at a Syracuse University owned, operated facility, or are directly supervised by Syracuse University Facilities Services’ employees and who may be exposed to hazardous energy while performing any servicing, maintenance, or modification activity.
