Purpose
The purpose of this Portable Fire Extinguisher Safety & Compliance Program is to establish University-wide requirements for the placement, inspection, maintenance, training, and safe use of portable fire extinguishers in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157. The program ensures extinguishers are properly maintained, accessible, and available for safe use during incipient-stage fire events, and that fire extinguisher activities across Syracuse University follow consistent, enforceable safety standards.
This program applies to all Syracuse University-owned or operated facilities, including academic, residential, administrative, athletic, research, utility and auxiliary locations, as well as remote properties and leased locations where required by contract.
Fire and Life Safety Services (FLSS) is the program owner and is responsible for implementation, oversight, enforcement, training, and recordkeeping related to portable fire extinguishers at Syracuse University.
FLSS has the authority to remove defective or non-compliant extinguishers from service, direct corrective action, and coordinate with departments and external vendors to maintain compliance with this program and applicable codes.
