Ladder Safety

This program applies to:

  • All Syracuse University employees and paid student employees
  • Unpaid students when using University ladders under supervision
  • All portable ladders: step ladders, extension ladders, single ladders, articulated/combination ladders, step stools, mobile ladder stands
  • All fixed ladders permanently attached to structures or equipment

This program contains information on how to:

  • Assign responsibilities for safe ladder use
  • Establish safe work practices for all ladder types
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.23, 1910.29, 1926 Subpart X, and ANSI A14 series standards
  • Reduce risk of falls, injuries, and property damage
  • Define training, inspection, and maintenance requirements

FLSS is the program owner and responsible for:

  • Developing, maintaining, and updating this program
  • Providing or coordinating training resources
  • Conducting periodic compliance audits
  • Investigating serious fall-related incidents
  • Providing technical guidance on ladder selection
