Energy Savings Realized Upon Completion of CST Project

Improvements were made to the mechanical systems at the Center for Science and Technology (CST) in 2021 and 2022. The multi-phase plan started in 2019 and is now complete. The project involved adding an energy recovery loop to the laboratory exhaust and reconfiguring the chillers to operate in heat recovery mode. These upgrades have resulted in a 25% reduction in steam use in 2023 and an annual emissions reduction of over 500 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e).

Chancellor Syverud Announces First Phase of University’s New Strategic Housing Plan

Chancellor Kent Syverud today announced details of the first phase of the University’s new strategic housing plan. This strategy follows approval from the Board of Trustees. Today’s announcement of the strategic housing plan follows the completion of a comprehensive, three-year housing review, which, among other things, found that undergraduate students wanted more options for living in University housing on North Campus that provides seamless access to various campus facilities and amenities.

Campus Facilities, Administration and Services Completes Upgrade to Streamlined, Modern Management Systems

Campus Facilities, Administration and Services (CFAS) has completed an extensive overhaul to its facilities maintenance and space management systems. The effort to modernize two of its key systems involved every aspect of the CFAS unit and seeks to implement a best-in-class approach to work order management, preventative maintenance requests and space management at the University.

Beginning on Feb. 29, both new systems will go live. Facilities maintenance and requests for service will be handled through IBM Maximo and will be accessible for campus community members via the Facilities Services website and through the Facility Maintenance Services tile on MySlice. The system streamlines the process of requesting repairs and maintenance on campus by replacing a series of patchwork forms and behind-the-scenes labor.

Parking and Traffic Information for 2023 School Day at the JMA Wireless Dome

On Thursday, Dec. 21, the women’s basketball team will host a school day at the JMA Wireless Dome. Approximately 60 schools from around the Central New York area have been invited to attend the Orange’s game against St. Francis University.

We are expecting 200 school buses on campus, with students being dropped off on College Place and the west side of Campus. Faculty and staff parking in the west campus lots may use the Irving Avenue Garage on Thursday to allow for space to park buses.

Campus Parking Information for Friday, Nov. 3

The Syracuse University football team will host Boston College on Friday, Nov. 3. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. As the game falls on a weekday, some campus lots and garages will be restricted during regular business hours.

Beginning at 3:30 p.m., faculty, staff and students with valid permits who need to access campus for academic reasons will be allowed to park in the University Avenue and Comstock Avenue garages. All Quad and West Campus lots will be restricted beginning at 4 p.m.

Emergency Repair of Steam Line on Comstock Avenue Scheduled This Week

Facilities Services, CenTrio Energy and a local contractor have begun an emergency repair of the steam line located on the west side of Comstock Avenue just north of the intersection at Euclid Avenue.

During the repair, there are no planned interruptions to building utility services in the area (domestic water, sewer, power or communication). However, the work will require a closure of a section of sidewalk and detour of pedestrian traffic at the two adjacent crosswalks to the east side of Comstock. Additionally, flaggers may be periodically provided should portions of the vehicular travel lane be required to complete the work. The work began on Monday, Oct. 9. The entire repair, including restoration, is expected to be completed this week.

New LED Lights Installed in the Lally Athletics Complex Arena

New LED lighting fixtures are shining bright in the John A. Lally Athletics Complex arena. Over the summer, nearly 300 fixtures were replaced with roughly 150 LED lights, helping improve lighting quality and save energy.

The arena lights run over 6,000 hours annually, which is equivalent to over 250 days. By using more efficient LED fixtures, the amount needed to light the arena has been nearly halved. This project will help the University reduce its carbon footprint by roughly 141 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) each year. CO2 equivalent is a metric used to compare and understand the impact of emissions from various greenhouse gas emissions based on their global warming potential. 141 metric tons of CO2e is equivalent to the emissions from over 100,000 pounds of coal burned.

What to Expect With the Link Hall Renovations

Machinery and power tools echo throughout Link Hall as construction workers bustle about the building. Since the spring of 2022, Link Hall has been undergoing renovations, and big changes are on the horizon.

Bruce Molino, director of space management and strategic initiatives in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS), believes these renovations will transform Link Hall into a welcoming space that fosters collaboration.
