Virginia Denton, Former Director of Design and Construction, Remembered for Stewardship of Physical Campus

Virginia Rieger Denton ’61 oversaw great change on Syracuse University’s physical campus during her years with the office formerly known as Design and Construction through her various roles, including as director. But it was the development of a special place of honor that she may have been most proud.

Following the terrorist bombing of Pan Am 103 in 1988, Denton and then-Chancellor Melvin Eggers formulated the design and development of the Place of Remembrance to commemorate the 35 SU students who died on the flight.

Take the ’Cuse Challenge and Hang Out with Pete Sala

The Fall 2018 semester at Syracuse University brings student engagement to a new level with the ’Cuse Challenge mobile app. The mobile app, available on the App Store and Google Play, features activities and traditions that students can participate in and complete for prizes.

With over 100 challenges (and growing) on the app, students are given a bucket list of things to do before they graduate. As students complete challenges, they earn points and prizes. This year’s grand prize for the top five challenge completers will be a private tour of the Carrier Dome with Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala.

University Launches Campus-Focused Facebook Page

The recently launched Facebook page SU Campus offers social media users—especially Syracuse University students, faculty and staff—a new means to keep up on happenings on campus.

Followers of the @SUCampus Facebook page and Twitter account will see posts about many topics, including student events, speakers, performances, art exhibitions and film screenings.

Timekeeping and HR Transaction Training Resources and Information Available

A cross-functional team continues to make progress to introduce timesaving systems to improve timekeeping and core HR transactions. This technology will bring new, simpler processes that result in the quicker inputting of more accurate data, ultimately allowing employees to spend less time on administrative functions and more time on their individual priorities. With the assistance of operational leaders and a knowledge network of department administrators, the project remains on track for a July 30 go live.

New Pizza Restaurant to Open in Campus Food Courts

Tomato WheelDiners in Goldstein, Kimmel and Schine food courts will notice a big change in both look and taste this summer. In response to feedback from students, Syracuse University Food Services is introducing The Tomato Wheel, an artisan pizza shop serving handmade flatbreads, pizza wheels and pizza by the slice.

Diners can expect to see menu options like pesto with roasted veggies or Sriracha chicken pizza, Buffalo wing twists, and spinach and artichoke or Philly cheese steak wheels. The Tomato Wheel will also offer made-to-order mini pizzas, including gluten-free and vegan options.

EPA Recognizes Syracuse University for Largest Green Power Use in ACC

Syracuse University announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized it as a Conference Champion in the 2017-18 College and University Green Power Challenge. Syracuse University currently uses more green power than any other school in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

logo with wordsSince April 2006, EPA’s Green Power Partnership has tracked and recognized the collegiate athletic conferences with the highest combined green power use within the program. The Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that helps increase green power use among U.S. organizations to advance the American market for green power and development of those sources as a way to reduce air pollution and other environmental impacts associated with electricity use. The Conference Champion Award recognizes the school that uses the most green power in a qualifying conference.

Syracuse University Announces $118 Million Investment to Create a New Stadium Experience

A new fixed roof, a vertically hung scoreboard, state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, improved accessibility and added Wi-Fi capabilities are just a handful of features visitors to Syracuse University’s stadium will experience beginning in fall 2020. The $118 million investment, authorized by the Board of Trustees, will enable the University to create a new stadium experience for students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans alike. Today’s announcement represents the next step in advancing the $255 million West Campus transformation strategy the University first announced on May 16, 2016.
