Job Fair Brings Together Those Seeking Positions with Opportunities in Food Services, Facilities Services

On Wednesday, July 10, Syracuse University hosted a community-based job event as part of the University’s Building Local initiative. This was the second event focused on fostering local opportunities, partnerships and business relationships. The first was a Procurement Fair held on May 21.

The goal of the event was to match job seekers from local area community job readiness agencies with hiring authorities within the University to fill numerous temporary positions in Food Services and Facilities Services. The agencies represented included: Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army, the Syracuse Rescue Mission, Women’s Opportunity Center, JOBSplus and the New York State Department of Labor.  These agencies provide occupational training programs and were asked to invite their clients with culinary, maintenance or administrative skills. By leveraging the agencies’ existing programs, the University is hoping to meet its upcoming labor needs for the fall semester.

Purchasing Department Announces New Purchasing Policy

The Purchasing Department, a business unit of the Business, Finance and Administrative Services division, has announced the publication of a new Purchasing Policy that went into effect July 1, 2019. The new policy formally establishes bidding thresholds, responsible parties and requirements for purchasing decisions made throughout the University. Additionally, it provides broader procurement decision-making at the departmental level, while establishing the Purchasing Department as the go-to resource for large procurement needs. The new policy also sets the same dollar thresholds for sponsored and non-sponsored funds in an effort to cut down on confusion.

Parking in Rear of Quad Lot Limited Due to Construction

Beginning today, parking in the rear of the Quad parking lot (formerly known as Q1) will be limited due to construction activity at the Dome. The work is expected to continue through winter break. The loading docks at Falk College and Heroy Geology Laboratory will remain open.

Throughout this construction schedule, Quad permit holders will continue to have access to Quad parking. Service permits will only be honored based on parking availability.

Dome Box Office Relocating to Ensley Athletic Center

Beginning Monday, June 17th, the Dome Box Office will move its ticket sales operation to the Ensley Athletic Center (adjacent to Manley Field House in the Lampe Athletic Complex, 1301 East Colvin Street, Syracuse, NY 13244). The Box Office will remain in this location until September Fall 2020 to accommodate the Dome roof replacement. Free, accessible parking is available at the Ensley Athletic Center in the Manley South lot.

The Box Office at the Ensley Athletic Center will operate extended hours on Mondays, from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, and will be open Tuesday through Friday, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, for purchasing tickets to all Dome events.

Bookstore to Close for Year-End Inventory

The Syracuse University Bookstore will be closed Friday, June 21 and Monday, June 24, for year-end inventory. The bookstore will reopen Tuesday, June 25, at 8:30 a.m.

I.D. orders for fiscal year 2019 business must be processed by the bookstore no later than Thursday, June 20. I.D. orders processed beginning Tuesday, June 25, will be fiscal year 2020 business.

Syracuse University Hosts First-Ever Procurement Fair, Launches Building Local Initiative

On Tuesday, May 21, Syracuse University hosted its first-ever Procurement Fair as part of its new Building Local initiative, a three-pronged effort focused on opportunity, partnerships and business. The fair introduced local business enterprises—including those owned by women, minorities, veterans and others (referred to collectively as XBEs)—to opportunities with the University; helped local businesses and XBEs understand the goods and services used and needed by the University; and provided information on how to gain diverse business certifications.

Representatives from more than 100 Central New York businesses attended the fair, including Melanie Randolph, owner of Your Window to the World, LLC. “Events like [the Procurement Fair] are going to open doors for local businesses and create opportunities with Syracuse University,” says Randolph. “This gives us a more one-to-one relationship, where we can really work as a community and align our values together. The small businesses can come together and be greater together.”

Masonry Restoration Begins on Trio of Crouse College Cupolas

The cupolas atop historic Crouse College are being removed and restored this summer. The first was carefully detached from its rooftop placement and lowered by a large crane to ground level on Wednesday morning (May 23), with the other two to follow. They will be rebuilt on site and reinstalled in mid-August.
