Syracuse University Libraries’ Module-2 Storage Facility Complete

The second phase of Syracuse University Libraries’ 14,000-square-foot storage facility on South Campus is now complete. The facility provides temperature and humidity-controlled cool and cold storage vaults in the building.

The facility addition was designed to provide optimum environmental conditions for the storage and preservation of items from the Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center. Unique, rare and fragile materials that require cold (32°F, 40% relative humidity) or cool (50°F, 30% relative humidity) environmental conditions can be stored in Module 2 for secure and long-term preservation. Module 2 also has customized security technology, fire protection and environmental controls that will halt degradation and extend the life of these valuable collections by several hundred years, ensuring crucial access to materials for teaching, research and scholarship at Syracuse University.

Auxiliary Services, CPDC Enhance Drumlins Trail System

For years, members of the University community have enjoyed the use of the trail system around the golf course at Drumlins Country Club for hiking, jogging, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The trails, which are open to use from sunrise to sunset, are also a resource utilized by the greater Central New York community.

Over the past few months, Auxiliary Services and a team from Campus Planning, Design and Construction have undertaken an effort to add modifications to the area for the safety of those who utilize the trail system. A fence has been installed along the south side of the 13th tee of the East Course to protect individuals from the sharp drop-off in the area. Signage has been posted at several trailheads and areas where community members enter the property to outline safe usage of the trail system. Additional signage about dangerous drop-offs, especially in the area surrounding the neighboring stone quarry, will be installed soon.

The achievement was led by the project team in Campus Planning, Design and Construction and the entire Campus Development and Facilities Operations unit, led by Vice President and Chief Campus Facilities Officer Pete Sala.

Opened in January 2020, the NVRC was designed by SHoP Architects with construction by LeChase Construction Service.

Among the building’s LEED®/sustainability achievements are:

  • Green roof parade deck
  • Photovoltaic array (located at the Shine Student Center)
  • Energy-efficient heating and cooling systems
