Food Services Honored for Best University Food Allergy Training Program

Syracuse University Food Services has received the award for 2020 Best Overall Food Allergy Training for Universities from AllerTrain™ by MenuTrinfo® LLC. The AllerTrain team recognized outstanding food service leaders in allergy training and safety by selecting winners from universities and restaurants across the country. Last year, Food Services received the award for Best Overall Food Allergy Program for Universities from the company.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the team at AllerTrain thought it crucial to celebrate food allergy champions across the nation and beyond, and the panel of food allergy experts and trainers who selected this year’s winners chose from an extremely diverse nomination pool.

Syracuse University Bookstore Ready to Go Green, End Use of Plastic Bags

On March 1, New York State will join the growing number of states and local municipalities across the country in the movement to ban the use of plastic bags.

At the Syracuse University Bookstore, Director Roger Hailstork and his staff are prepared for the change and are ready to do their part in the effort to phase out 23 billion-plus plastic bags New York State residents use annually.

Ernie Davis Dining Center Celebrates 10 Years, 6.5 million Meals Served

The staff at Ernie Davis Dining Center have come a long way. Wednesday, Jan. 15 marked 10 years of operation for the campus’s busiest dining center, and many of the staff on duty for the dinner celebration have been there since day one.

The staff celebrated Wednesday night with special t-shirts marking the occasion, with those that had been there from the beginning sporting the additional phrase “Original Team Member.” A special carved rib roast was on the menu, prepared and served by many of the same people who had cooked and served the very first meals at the center back in January 2010. Staff and students also enjoyed cake and milkshakes as part of the celebration. Even Otto the Orange stopped by to pose for pictures and to take a look at a photo retrospective set up along the center’s glass walls.

Hospitality Advisor for Yankees, Rams, Cowboys Will Look to Improve Fan Experience at the Dome

In an ongoing effort to provide an enhanced fan experience at the Dome, Auxiliary Services engaged Michael Bekolay of Venue Hospitality Solutions to provide feedback on the facility’s food service operations and capabilities. He began his work on campus in November when he took in a home football game and examined all aspects of the concessions infrastructure. He’ll soon attend basketball games to assess how facility operations adjust to a smaller crowd and a different layout. Bekolay will also gather feedback from the Athletics department, and most importantly, from fans and visitors to the Dome.

“It’s exciting to bring someone with Michael’s background to campus,” said Jennifer Uryniak, interim director of Auxiliary Services. “We want our game-day experience to be second to none, so we look forward to hearing his recommendations as we move forward on our planned renovations.”

Syracuse Athletics ‘Tough4T’ Shirts On Sale Now

All Syracuse University basketball fans now have the opportunity to wear the Orange men’s and women’s Tough4T warm-up shirts made in support of point guard Tiana Mangakahia, who was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer in June. The shirts are available for purchase at the Syracuse University Bookstore. The warm-up shirts were put on the market in support of Mangakahia and in response to fan inquiries to purchase the shirts. The athletics department worked with Nike, the official apparel partner, to make the shirts available. Pursuant to NCAA guidelines proceeds will support Tiana and her family during this time of need. The University has waived standard royalty from the sale of the shirts.

Syracuse University Food Services Receives A+ Score from PETA for Fourth Consecutive Year

For the fourth consecutive year, Syracuse University’s dining centers have received an A+ rating from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), placing the University on the Dean’s List in PETA’s college rankings. According to VeganReportCard.com, “The Dean’s List includes an elite group of institutions that have accrued enough Vegan Report Card points to rank among the highest tier of A-rated schools. They are the vanguard when it comes to vegan cuisine on campus.”

Drumlins Tennis Pro Earns National Award

Brian Dahlstrom, the head tennis professional at Drumlins Tennis Club, has been named Clinician of the Year by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern section. The award is given to a teaching professional whose dedication and enthusiasm in teaching USTA programs (including schools, parks and recreation, community tennis associations, national junior tennis leagues, staff trainings and clinics) have helped increase player participation and retention in the section.

Gerri “Babydoll” Williams Celebrates 50 Years at Syracuse University

This past October, Gerri Williams celebrated a milestone that most employees—in any job, with any organization—only dream of attaining: her 50th anniversary with Syracuse University.

Williams began her career with Food Services in 1969. She worked in Washington Arms, Haven Hall and the Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center and dabbled in Campus Catering before landing her current role in Manley Field House’s dining center. At Manley, she works as a group leader, serving the football players and coaches.

Syracuse University Holds 35th Annual International Thanksgiving Celebration

As hundreds of members of the Syracuse University community gathered in Goldstein Auditorium on the evening of Nov. 21, the main attraction—a 35-pound turkey, took center stage.

More than 400 international students were treated to a traditional American Thanksgiving meal at Syracuse University’s 35th International Thanksgiving Celebration. As the meal began, dozens of students gathered around Joe Sidoni, associate director for events with Food Services, on the Goldstein Auditorium stage to take pictures and video on cell phones as he carved the bird.

You don’t have to be a hardcore foodie to know that food plays a powerful role in our lives. Sometimes, the smell of a familiar meal or a beloved baked good can be deeply meaningful, especially when we’re far away from home.

The five dining centers at Syracuse University serve thousands of meals each day – hot, cold, snacks, gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian and everything in between.
